150 villages in Central Kurram declared safe for IDPs return

PARACHINAR, 21 March: More than 150 villages in Central Kurram Agency have been declared safe for the return of the internally displaced tribesmen by the political administration, official sources said.

The sources maintained that the local authorities have been conveyed through the Fate secretariat that 49 villages in Masozai, 35 in Mirmat Khel, 16 in Misar Khel, 18 in Qisa Khel and 22 villages in Zemasht areas have been cleared by the security forces and are now safe for the return of IDPs.

The local authorities estimated that upto 14,000 displaced people would be repatriated to the cleared areas.

More than 40,000 people were forced to leave their homes after sectarian violence between Sunni and Shia erupted in Central Kurram in 2010. These displaced tribesmen were accommodated in Durrani and Togh Sarai makeshift camps.

The people of these areas have expressed pleasure over the clearance of the areas and their intending repatriation.

“We spent a miserable time while staying away from home. Now we are very happy and thankful to the Almighty Allah that our areas have been cleared,” remarked a resident of the Central Kurram.

It merits a mention here that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governor Iqbal Zafar Jhagra has directed all the relevant authorities to complete the repatriation process of all IDPs belonging to Orakzai and Kurram agencies.

150 women get training on making handicrafts in Nowshera

PESHAWAR, 20 March: The six-month training on making handicrafts to women by Rashid Hussain Foundation has concluded in Nowshera.

The concluding ceremony of the training course was organised in Pabbi on Saturday which was attended by former member of the National Assembly Jameela Gilani and other women from different walks of life. Suleman Yousafzai, head of Rashid Hussain Foundation, said in his speech that the organisation will make efforts to impart skills training to maximum deserving women in order to enable them to work at their homes to support their families. He said the Foundation imparts training to women in making clothes, purses, footwear and other hand-made items.

At the end of the ceremony, certificates were given to women who successfully completed the six-month training.

“We are very thankful to Rashid Hussain Foundation as it was a very beneficial training. Kurram admin sets three-day deadline for unregistered Afghan families

SADA, 17 March: The political administration of Kurram Agency has set three-day deadline for unregistered Afghan refugees to leave the area otherwise legal actions would be taken against them.

The political agent of the agency and commander of the security forces wing told a delegation of Afghan refugees in Tal fort the other day that all those unregistered Afghan refugees who have been living in the agency must repatriate to their country voluntarily within three days, failing which the local authorities would take legal actions against them.

According to an official of the local administration, about 400 unregistered Afghan families have been residing in the agency while majority of them had left the area.

Exhibition of women’s handmade products arranged in Peshawar University

PESHAWAR, 16 March: An exhibition of handmade products of women from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) was organised in the University of Peshawar (UoP) on Wednesday.

The purpose of the exhibition was to bring forward the creative work of women from KP and FATA and encourage them. Anisa Shah, chief organiser of the event, said the handmade clothes, jewellery, bangles, decoration pieces, footwear and other items have been put on display at 15 stalls.

“The trend of purchasing handicrafts is diminishing gradually. The purpose of arranging this event is establish contacts between buyers and sellers of these products,” she told TNN.

A large number of people visited the exhibition and took keen interest in it. They said more such exhibitions should be arranged to encourage women to promote their products.

Al-Khidmat Foundation distributes wheelchairs among disabled people

PESHAWAR, 16 March: Al-Khidmat Foundation, a subsidiary welfare organization of Jamaat-e-Islami, has distributed wheelchairs among 360 physical handicapped persons here the other day.

District president of the foundation Noor ur Haq gave the wheelchairs to the disabled persons in a ceremony.

One of the recipients told TNN on the occasion that the wheelchairs would enable them to commute as they had been facing mobility problems due to their disability.

The disabled persons also demanded of the government to make government offices wheelchairs-friendly to facilitate physically handicapped people. They also demanded that special arrangements be made in public transport for the disabled people.

SSC examinations begin in KP amid tight security arrangements

PESHAWAR, 15 March: The annual Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations (class 9th and 10th)under the auspices of eight educational boards got underway in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa today (Tuesday).

Stringent security measures have been taken by the provincial government not only to provide protection to students but to discourage use of unfair means and cheating in the examinations halls.

The provincial government has already directed the administration of all the districts to impose Section 144 in the surrounding areas of the examination centers to keep a check on cheating.

According to a senior official of an education board, all the invigilating staff has been strictly directed to be vigilant to stop cheating in exams. The official added that special inspection teams have also been made which will pay surprise visits to examinations centers.

It merits a mention here that the KP government has imposed ban on selling of pocket-size guides in the province which are commonly used in cheating and unfair means in exams.

Mushaira organized to promote peace through literature

SADA, 15 March: Tribesmen here arranged a Pashto mushaira in a bid to promote peace and love through literature.

Poets and poetry loving people from as far as Hangu, Dursamand, Tal, Sada ad Orakzai Agency participated in the mushaira which was held in Bagan near here.

The poets presented their verses and received accolade from the charged and hungry for peace audience.

Muqesh Khan of the Adabi Tolana, who recited his verses in the mushaira, told TNN that Pakhtuns are peace loving people but unfortunately terror and war is brought to our area which shattered the peaceful environment of the tribal territories.

“By holding the mushaira, we made an attempt to bring back smile on the faces of the tribesmen and make them realized that peace has returned to the area,” he said.

Another poet who participated in the literary event said such events play a catalyst role in bring change in the thinking of people.

“People love poetry and they listen to poets with great patience. That is why the impact of a poet’s words is instant and powerful,” he remarked.

Governor Jhagra announces compensation for victims of coalmine collapse

PESHAWAR, 14 March: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Iqbal Zafar Jhagra has announced Rs300,000 compensation amount for the families of each of the miners who got killed inside a coalmine in Orakzai Agency. The governor also announced Rs100,000 each for the injured laborers.

According to an official handout, Governor Jhagra visited the Khyber Teaching Hospital here on Sunday evening and inquired about the miners admitted in the burn unit of the health facility.

The governor expressed solidarity with all the bereaved families and prayed for the early recovery of the miners. He also offered Fateha for those died in the incident.

Meanwhile while replying to TNN’s correspondent regarding repatriation of the internally displaced people of Fata, the governor said about 200,000 families have been sent to their homes so far while the remaining 150,000 families would repatriated till November this year.

He said the government has set December deadline for the complete settlement of the displaced people but hopefully the process would be completed well before the time.

8 labourers killed, 10 injured as coalmine collapses in Orakzai

KALAYA, 13 March: At least eight labourers lost their lives and 10 others sustained injuries when a coalmine collapsed due to accumulation of poisonous gas in Orakzai Agency on Saturday.

The political administration said the incident happened in the evening when 35 coalmine labourers were working at the mine. It said 16 labourers were rescued, while one is still missing. The injured workers were taken to the hospitals in Hangu and Kohat.

The deceased workers belong to Shangla and Swat.

Govt Girls’ school inaugurated in Kurram Agency

SADDA, 10 March: Member of National Assembly(MNA) Sajid Hussain Turi inaugurated the first ever government primary school for girls in the area of Mir Bagh, Kurum Agency on Thursday. More than five hundred girls of the area would be able to get education in the school.

 The officials of political administration said that the school comprising three rooms was built in a period of two years with a cost of Rs. 6.5 million. They said that teachers and other staff have been appointed for the school.

The local people expressed happiness over the opening of the school. A resident of the area, Muhammad Ali told TNN that in the absence of the school, some of the girls of his village would go to school in far away areas while a large number of them failed to get education.

“First of all, I thank the MNA for his efforts to make it happen. This is a matter of pleasure for us and the entire village" he said

50 couples tie knot in collective wedding ceremony

PARACHINAR, 09 March: A philanthropist organization has arranged collective marriages of 50 destitute couples here on Wednesday.

A large number of people mostly from the families of the brides and grooms and the local residents attended the wedding ceremony. Special feast was served to the guests on the occasion.

Besides, dowry was also given to the couples.

The couples who tied the knot expressed pleasure over the collective marriage ceremony saying there were unable to arrange marriage on their won due to limited resources.
