FATA Grand Alliance Asks For Referendum On FATA Merger With KP

October 02, 2016
PESHAWAR, 02 October: A Jirga of FATA Grand Alliance which held here in Bagh-e-Naran on Sunday rejected the proposals put forward by FATA Reforms Committee for changing the status of tribal areas.
Addressing the the Jirga of tribal elders and Maliks, ex-senator hailing from Khyber Agency Hameedullah Jan Afridi said that decisions of FATA Reforms Committee made in a room that were not acceptable to them and demanded that a referendum should be conducted for deciding the future status of tribal region.
While talking to TNN after the jirga, Hameedullah Jan said, “The government should authorize the people of FATA to decide their own future. We will lose eight seats in the senate if FATA was integrated into KP. Merger with KP will deprive us from several rights including students’ scholarships and FATA quota in colleges”.
Malik Faizullah Jan while addressing the jirga said that before bringing any kind of reforms in tribal areas, the government should first send back Temporary Displaced Persons (TDPs) to their areas, compensate them for their destroyed houses and reconstruct educational and health centers in FATA.
Speaking on the occasion, Malik Aurangzeb said that they do not want FATA to be merged with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). He demanded that Frontier Crimes Regulations (FCR) should be amended and a separate council should be formed for them.
There was another demerit of FATA merger with KP as the later would utilize all the funds given by federation to FATA, he added.
